Physicals For Employment

General Post-offer Physical Exams:
Post-offer physical exams are recommended to help assess an applicant’s current medical and physical condition, as well as indentify pre-existing medical conditions, past injuries, etc. When coupled with a job-specific physical demands assessment, the examining physician can make a realistic determination regarding an applicant’s ability to perform their job duties.

Commercial Drivers' Exams
CDL exams are performed to medically evaluate individuals to operate equipment and vehicles which require a commercial drivers' license. Specific, Federal and State exam guidlines are followed as applicable which include evaluations for vision, hearing, color perception.

Periodic Medical Exams (Regulatory)
Numerous jurisdictions and governmental agencies require that specific examinations be conducted on a periodic basis for reasons of public safety, hazardous materials surveillance, and other factors.

Examples of periodic medical exams include CDL drivers exams, medical clearances to wear a respirator, fire fighters’ fitness for duty assessments, and healthcare worker communicable disease assessments

Respirator Medical Exams:
The wearing of a respirator can in itself lead to functional difficulties. Since respirator use is often associated with other environmental factors such as extremes of heat, cold, confined space, etc, wearers’ of certain respirators are required to undergo annual medical clearances. Examples of respirator users include firefighters, divers, painters, lead and asbestos abatement workers, demolition workers, and HAZMAT response teams.

A respiratory exam may include a detailed medical history, physical exam, spirometry (pulmonary function), and chest x-ray. In addition, a fit test is also required to ensure that the respirator effectively seals the user’s airways from hazardous substances.

Fitness for Duty Exams:
Existing employees may experience a change in their health status, suffer an injury, or otherwise become subject to circumstances which make their ability to perform their job safely to come into question.

Job-duty specific exams which address the individuals’ functional capabilities can assist an employer determine whether an employee can work effectively and in a manner which does not pose a hazard to the employee, to coworkers, or others. An examination can be further enhanced by use of special testing, lab screening, etc.
